Although world drug makers spend around $150 billion on research and development, Russia has made a breakthrough in the drug-making industry with its anti-Covid vaccine.

Growing world population and the need to combat disease and pandemics are adding more pressures on the world’s top 10 pharmaceutical companies to spend more.  Probably, a new strategy for the sector will be a must in the coming years.

The pharmaceutical industry is forecast to total $1.5 trillion by 2023 on the back of growing demand for medicines worldwide. Currently, it stands at around $1.2 trillion, according to WHO estimates.




In the following lines, I overview the world’s top 10 pharmaceutical producers, but first it is appropriate to shed light on Russian top drug makers.

Top Russian pharmaceutical producers:

Russia’s top drug makers include Solopharm, Protek, Evalar, Pharmstandard, SynBio and Microgen.

 

In terms of sales, the world’s top 10 drug makers are as follows: Pfizer, Roche, Novartis, Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, AbbVie, Sanofi, Bristol Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca.




Pfizer

Pfizer is the world’s top pharmaceutical producer. The Connecticut-based company has branches all over the globe. The drug maker manufactures a variety of products for immunity, tumors, neurological and rare diseases.

Pfizer’s earning stood at $51.75 billion in 2019.

Roche

The Swiss-based company develops drugs and equipment to treat a variety of diseases, including tumors, immunology and pandemics.  Its earnings totaled $63.35 billion in 2019.

 

Novartis

The Swiss-based company produces treatments for tumors, immunology, skin, nerves, the respiratory system and eyes. Its earnings topped $47.45 billion in 2019.

 

Merck

The US-based company develops drugs and vaccines to treat a variety of diseases, i.e. cardiovascular diseases, tumors, endocrine glands and infectious diseases.

It posted earnings worth $46.84 billion in 2019.




GlaxoSmithKline

A British company produces a wide range of products. It is well known for its HIV medicines and vaccines. Its earnings totaled $43.54 billion in 2019.

 

Johnson & Johnson

It is a US-based company that has been in business for almost 130 years.  It produces a wide range of medicines and products.

The company posted earnings worth $42.19 billion in 2019.

AbbVie

The US-based company produces a wide range of drugs to treat several diseases, i.e. skin diseases, tumors and others. Its earnings totaled $33.27 billion in 2019.





Sanofi

It is a French drug maker that produces a wide range of medicines and products. The company’s earnings totaled $27.77 billion in 2019.

Bristol-Myers Squibb

The New York-based company produces medicines for oncology, cardiovascular diseases as well as immunology and fibrosis. The company posted earnings worth $26.15 billion in 2019.

AstraZeneca

It is a British-Swedish company that produces a wide range of medicines. The company posted earnings worth $23.57 billion in 2019.
